Teihengyo Chapter 20 – I Ordered A Sword

Translator: Havion
——————————————————————————————————-

[Artemis, are you awake?] (Varius)

I began a conversation using the divine power the moment I left the building.

[Varius? Rather than being awake, I don’t sleep as I am not human.] (Artemis)

…It seems that it’s all right to contact her whenever.

[I have something I want to ask regarding the Luna Metal, is that OK?] (Varius)

[Sure thing, I can answer anything.] (Artemis)

Artemis’ voice sounded full of confidence.

Well then…Although ornamental, I did hear about it being made into a sword, guess I’ll ask about its practicality as a weapon.

[Is the Luna Metal…a suitable metal to be used as a sword material?] (Varius)

[A sword, huh… If that’s the case, I’ll have you know that  it won’t be of much help to anyone other than you yourself, Varius. You need to pass divine power through it, otherwise it’s as good as a dull sword.] (Artemis)

[Once I pass divine power through it…how would it perform?] (Varius)

[Honest, even if the current Varius use it, it’s sharpness will only be on par with that of a sword made of mythril. However, once you’ve mastered how to use the divine power, you’ll be able to slice through orihalcum like yoghurt.] (Artemis)

That was Artemis’ answer.

In other words, “It’s useless to mass produce and sell it, but it’s useful if I am the one using it.”, huh?

[Thank you, Artemis. For the time being, I’ve decided on what I should do next. I’ll be in touch again if I have anything else to ask.] (Varius)

[Sure. I’ll be waiting.] (Artemis)

With that, I cut off my connection with Artemis.

Since I have the Ruyi Staff, I thought that I had no need for another weapon, but…situations where the Ruyi Staff or its substitute have no effect may appear in the future.

I’ve got around 3.9 tonnes’ left anyway, so in order to make good use of the divine power, it’s probably fine for me to make one.

About using the rest of it…oi, oi, I better think about it.

Having made my decision, I went towards the smithy.

*************************************************************************************

[Excuse me.] (Varius)

[Oh, what do you want?] (Blacksmith)

I called out to the blacksmith when I entered a shop and received a brusque reply in return.

……It seems that this planet isn’t any different when it comes to unsociable blacksmiths.

After letting that fact sink in, I moved on to the main topic.

[I was thinking of having a pure Luna Metal sword, made-to-order.] (Varius)

Hearing that…the blacksmith glared at me wide-eyed, and spoke in a low tone.

[Haaah? Made of Luna Metal?] (Blacksmith)

[That’s right.] (Varius)

…I wonder if I said something that hit a nerve?

As I wondered, the blacksmith came over with a displeased look on his face.

[……You are asking me, to make a sword using that material which only makes things blunt? Is that what you’re saying, you bastard?] (Blacksmith)

I was somewhat overwhelmed by the pressure emitted from the blacksmith.

…Although it’s reaching a level where I feel like running out of the store, since I’ve got an idea on what angered the blacksmith from his words, I decided to try persuading him.

[Indeed, I am aware that the general perception is such that “Swords made of Luna Metal are only good for decorative purposes”. I however, have a special power that allows me to maximise the blade’s sharpness precisely because it is made from Luna Metal. Please, believe me.] (Varius)

I said while looking directly into the blacksmith’s eyes.

……Most likely, this blacksmith has quite a bit of pride in his skills.

Ordering a sword that has no practical purpose must have hurt his pride.

That’s why he displayed such an attitude.

Hence, there’s only one I should do.

I must insist that “I want a Luna Metal made sword precisely because it is the most practical for me in battle”.

I tried to persuade him based on that line of thought.

The blacksmith replied in response.

[…Your eyes don’t’ look like they’re lying. Fine, I’ll make it. However, only if you can procure the Luna Metal yourself.] (Blacksmith)

Relieved, I took about 10kg worth of Luna Metal out using storage magic.

[I’ll leave this with you then.] (Varius)

The blacksmith’s eyes went round when I said that.

[Wh…you already have it? What’s more, that’s a lot of it…] (Blacksmith)

The blacksmith heaved a deep sigh, and continued.

[Caaan’t beee heeelped. I did say I’d make it after all….. The fee will be around 150000 Zol. However…that is only if you can prove to me that you can properly use a Luna Metal sword. If long as you cannot produce a sharpness that I am satisfied with…the fee will be tripled.] (Blacksmith)

The blacksmith raises the three fingers on his left hand as he said so.

I see.

In other words, “If I don’t hurry and train my divine power, I won’t be able to convince the blacksmith and will end up paying 3 times the fee. The deadline is when the sword is completed”.

Very well.

If possible, I want the blacksmith to think that “He did a good job” but…well, in the worst case, I would just be paying an extra 300000 Zol to get the job done.

For me who currently have 24 million Zol, it isn’t an expense that would hurt me anyway, so I’ll take him up on that challenge.

[Understood. May I ask when can I come to collect it?] (Varius)

[Let’s see…it’s the first time I’m handling Luna Metal so…come back here in 10 days.] (Blacksmith)

With that decided, I left the smithy.

…… 10 days huh?

It’s too short a time for me to make this new power mine.

It seems that the current me will be able to produce a sharpness equivalent to a mythril sword but…whether that blacksmith will be satisfied with just that is up in the air.

That’s why, even if I don’t reach the level of orihalcum, I should at least achieve a level rivalling that of adamantite…but if I just train normally, achieving that will just remain a dream within a dream.

But I am a Tamer.

I remembered a theory that would rapidly train my divine power.

Tomorrow, I will put that theory to the test.

Teihengyo Chapter 19 – Departing With Dead Stocks

Translator: Cialaxis/Havion
Editor: Havion
——————————————————————————————————

[Well, I’ll be going off for a bit, please wait on the Nimbus Cloud again.] (Varius)

[Ahh] (Caucasus)

[Yeah, yeah] (Beelzebub)

I had both of them standby in the airspace above…and entered the guild.

The adventurers started making a ruckus the moment entered…well, I guess it’s something I’ll get used to after a while. Without minding it too much, I lined up at the [Requests/Achievement Reports/Materials Purchasing] counter.

My turn came a few minutes later.

[I came to give a report regarding the [Gathering Luna Metal] request.] (Varius)

I handed my guild card over to the receptionist lady.

After I did so… The receptionist lady alternated her gaze between my guild card and my face, and broke into a smile.

[Varius-san! You’re alive!] (Receptionist)

……Oh yeah.

The round trip to the moon and back did take up quite some time.

She probably thought that I got hit by the arrow and died.

[How many days has it been since I took the request again?] (Varius)

I asked as I have lost my sense of time.

[It’s been 9 days! It seems like the other adventurers were worried as well you know? Saying things like “That Sage, did he get hit by the arrow and die?”] (Receptionist)

……So that’s it.

The reason the adventurers were making a ruckus was likely not because of my hair colour, but due to my safe return.

[Well then, you came to give a report on the Luna Metal gathering request? How much did you manage to gather?] (Receptionist)

The receptionist was all smiles as she asked me.

Now then, how should I reply?

Taking all 4 tonnes out is out of the question, but even if I bring out a small amount, I wouldn’t know how much they would allow me to sell…… Guess It’s best if I just ask.

[Rather than that, could you tell me what’s the sales limit?] (Varius)

The receptionist had a surprised look on her face in response to the question.

[Eh…We haven’t even thought of a limit for it. Well anyway, I don’t think the limit will be reached anyway, why not bring them out first?]

In the end, I didn’t manage to get an exact limit.

Oh well.

For now, it should be fine if I just pile the materials on the counter and observe what happens next.

Thinking so, I pulled out around 50kg worth of Luna Metal using Storage Magic.

When I did that, the receptionist who was forcing a smile despite her bewilderment, finally lost even that business smile.

[….H,huh? I feel like I’m seeing an unbelievable amount of Luna Metal….] Receptionist

The receptionist repeatedly rubbed both her eyes looking at the pile of Luna Metal…It’s my first time seeing someone doing so.

[Since I was seriously focused on gathering the Luna Metal for 9 days, it ended up being this much] (Varius)

The receptionist sighed.

…..No good, no good.

If this continues, I will be thought of only possessing this amount of Luna Metal.

[Umm…..Actually, the Luna Metal I have is close to 80 times of this…] (Varius)

[….Eh? What did you say?] (Receptionist)

[80 times. Even so, has this amount still not hit the purchasing limit?] (Varius)

After I said that to her…the receptionist got up and ran further inside the building.

After a while, the receptionist returned with a middle-aged man.

[That is…are you saying those are the Luna Metals brought in by the Sage in question?] (Man)

The man’s eyes went wide looking at the pile of Luna Metal.

[Yes. Furthermore, from what Varius-san said, it seems that he has “Around 80 times this amount” ….] (Receptionist)

[H-m, well it’s true that with that amount, the Guild’s funds will hit rock bottom.] (Man)

The man tapped his forehead while agonizing over it after speaking with the receptionist.

As he was doing so, the receptionist shot me a question.

[Um…exactly where did you obtain this amount of Lunametal?] (Receptionist)

For a moment, I was at a loss on how to answer her.

Even if I said “I went to the moon”, the discussion would just conclude with me saying something along the lines of “It’s up to you whether you believe it or not”…

On the other hand, if I lie, it would be bad if that lie spreads to the other adventurers.

After some deliberation, I decided to tell the truth while blurring out the important parts.

[Speaking of gathering the Luna Metal, wasn’t there mention of an arrow flying out of nowhere when one attempts to gather it?] Varius

[That’s right.] (Receptionist)

[I had identified the person who shot it. It seems that the person lost the means of returning home…and as a reward for bringing that person home, I received the Luna Metal. ] (Varius)

I did not lie.

It’s just that I did not reveal that the “home” was in fact in outer space.

[T…..That’s amazing…] (Receptionist)

The receptionist was at a loss for words.

It seems that I properly dodged the question, that’s one thing settled.

A short while after that discussion…the man came to a decision.

[Varius-kun, for now, we would like to purchase twice the amount that you have placed here. Would that be fine?] (Man)

[Understood] (Varius)

With that, I took the additional Luna Metal  out from my storage magic and ended up selling 120kg worth of it.

I thought it was about 100kg…but it looks like they were heavier than I thought.

After determining that no other ores were mixed in and following by some standard procedures, I received a payment of 24 million Zol.

Before leaving, I casually asked the receptionist a question.

[In the end, what would Luna Metal be used for?] (Varius)

[Let’s see. This is only hearsay but…there’s a rumour saying that a certain noble has used it as the material for his sword. Well, it seems to be purely ornamental though.] (Receptionist)

[I see.] (Varius)

That wasn’t much of a reference.

Let’s see…while I’m at it, I might as well ask Artemis.

Teihengyo Chapter 18 – Together With A Newfound Power

Translator: Cialaxis/Havion
Editor: Havion

Havion: Hey everyone, sorry for the late post, some IRL stuff happened so things were delayed. (That and Arknights came out). Also, Cialaxis is still kind of busy at the moment so for the time being I’ll likely be doing the translations for a bit I think. Things will be a little slow but I’ll try to get things up eventually.

Well that’s that, enjoy the chapter!

_______________________________________________________________________________

Artemis woke up from her rest faster than expected.

Ever since she said [Give me time], Artemis reverted to her original form of a bow and has not moved since then…but after what seemed to be about 19 hours, Artemis has once again returned to the form of a girl.

Since the Ruyi Staff has been moving according to the rotation of the planet, as long as it has not approached us once more, it’s certain that 24 hours have not passed.

[Have you recovered your strength?] (Varius)

[Yeah. It is now possible to grant you my strength.] (Artemis)

Artemis said that…..and extended her right hand.

[I’ll be transferring my power, give me your hand.] (Artemis)

I wordlessly gripped her hand.

As I did so……the feeling of something warm flowing in is transmitted to my entire body.

[So warm……what in the world is this?] (Varius)

[This is called divine power. How do I put it…well, it’s something that only existences like mine have the right to possess.] (Artemis)

To my question, Artemis gave such an answer.

[……That kind of power, is it all right for me to receive it?]

[No problem. The aforementioned [Right to Possess] implies that one is born with the divine magical circuits. The act of making such circuits in someone else’s body is not forbidden. ] (Artemis)

As soon as she finished her sentence, that warm feeling that was flowing in me had stopped.

[That being said, originally, humans are not able to wield divine power… The circuit was created without any issues, but I was only able to transfer a miniscule amount of power over to you. Any more and the divine power in your body would go out of control.] (Artemis)

Artemis had a somewhat vexed expression.

[However, if you continue to train your divine powers from here on, you should one day achieve a level where it will become usable. Please do your best to master it.] (Artemis)

Artemis gave a thumbs up as she said so.

My heart danced at this unexpected boon.

To think that I would obtain a special power by coming here.

Although I’m still completely unsure on how to use it.

…… Guess I’ll ask.

[Regarding this divine power, how do I use it?] (Varius)

[Oh right. First, I mentioned an offensive skill using divine arrows, didn’t I? Besides that, one can interfere with space-time as well as revive the dead. Finally, and this isn’t exactly a feature of the divine power, but rather a byproduct of when I imparted the power to you, Varius……you can communicate with me, without regards to distance and with zero latency.] (Artemis)

…… What a ridiculous power.

It is impossible to carry out space-time interference or revival of the dead using magic.

The usage of the divine arrows depends on my training method…but seeing how the other 2 skills are, it should be stronger than the average magic at the very least.

I’m getting excited all of a sudden.

[Thank you. Regarding how useful this divine power is, I’ll be sure to give a report every so often through our communication.] (Varius)

[Ahh, I’ll be looking forward to it.] (Artemis)

With this, Artemis’ [Thanks] to me has safely concluded.

…is what I thought but…Artemis made one more suggestion.

[There’s a limit to how much divine power I could give you, however…… Varius, you originally came to collect the Luna Metal did you not? Since there’s more than enough Luna Metal on the moon, it’s fine for you to take as much as you want.] (Artemis)

[……Thank you?] (Varius)

[Ahh] (Artemis)

To think that coming here would help me fulfil the gathering request which I had already given up.

[Well then, I’ll be taking them.] (Varius)

Saying that, I began storing whatever Luna Metal I could using storage magic.

However, when I’ve stored about 4 tonnes’ worth of Luna Metal…

[Wa…Wait a minute!!] (Artemis)

Hearing Artemis’ call, I stopped.

[What’s wrong?] (Varius)

[Varius…exactly how much can you store…] (Artemis)

…… Crap. I may have taken too much.

[…… Sorry. If I had taken too much, I’ll return them.] (Varius)

[It’s fine, I don’t mind what you have stored. The moon seems to produce Luna Metal when it collides with comets, so the amount here is actually more than before. I was just a little shocked, that’s all…] (Artemis)

It seems that it’s fine to hold on to what I have stored so far.

I’m grateful. Since it’s a resource one can’t get much on the surface, I was thinking of bringing back about one crater’s worth but…even around 4 tonnes’ worth can be considered a big boon.

Even if I sell just half of it, I’d get 4 billion Zol……well, I’m pretty sure they won’t allow me to sell that much.

Well, I’ll just take my time in finding an effective method.

Since we were at it, the 4 of us (A person, 2 monsters, and an equipment?) took a stroll after that to kill some time.

Soon after..the tip of the Ruyi Staff which made a full revolution finally entered our view.

[Well, this is where we say our goodbyes.] (Varius)

[Ahh. …… Give me a call every once in a while, promise?] (Artemis)

[What is that bright light?] (Varius)

[Ah, this? I thought of transferring you all over to that staff. Well, think of it as an example of space-time interference.] (Artemis)

The light in Artemis’ hands enveloped the entire Nimbus Cloud, along with its environmental shield and us……the next thing I knew I was gripping the Ruyi Staff.

Caucasus and Beelzebub are with me too.

The Nimbus Cloud is safely held between Caucasus’ horns.

[It was fun, Artemis!] [1](Varius)

[Ahh, thanks for helping me~!] (Artemis)

I wasted no time in using the divine powers to communicate with Artemis……and began shortening the Ruyi Staff.

****************************************************************************************************

A few days have passed since then.

[Caucasus, I’ll leave the defrosting to you.] (Varius)

[Yeah.] (Caucasus)

Caucasus’ horns once again let off a flash of light…and as the light is absorbed into the surface of the lake, the ice melted without leaving a trace.

Just to be sure, I used detection magic to probe the inside of the lake.

…… Yep, everything seems to be alive and well.

Relieved, I returned to the guild using the Nimbus Cloud.

…… Now then Luna Metal, I wonder how much of you will be bought. I’m looking forward to it.

Teihengyo Chapter 17 – We’ve Reached The Moon

Translator: Cialaxis
Editor: Havion
———————————————————————————————–

Once we are at a height where the ground is visible, I steered the Nimbus Cloud towards the airspace of the lake.

Upon nearing the lake’s surface, I took the Ruyi Staff out using storage magic and extended it towards the bottom of the lake.

Several tens of seconds later.

Once I felt that the tip of the Ruyi staff made contact with the bottom of the lake, I stopped its extension.

Right after that…Artemis contacted me telepathically.

[I have strengthened the life force of all living organisms in the lake. With this, they should be fine even if you momentarily freeze the lake.] (Artemis)

[Thank you. …There you have it Caucasus, the preparations are complete. Please cast the freezing magic at once.] (Varius)

[Understood.] (Caucasus)

Upon my instructions, Caucasus directs his horns towards the lake.

…and released a light filled with magic from his horns in the water.

A few seconds later…

Accompanied by cracking sounds, the entire lake became a lump of ice in just a moment.

As a test, I grabbed the Ruyi Staff and tried giving it a shake.

…All right, I have no complaints. We should be able to aim for the moon without any issues.

[Now then, to the moon!] (Varius)

I clung onto the Ruyi Staff with Artemis equipped, and began to extend the Ruyi Staff.

*******************************************************************************************************

[Ooh, we’re finally back at the height we were at before.] (Caucasus)

[Damn straight.] (Beelzebub)

It has been around 6 minutes since the Ruyi Staff began making its way to the moon.

Caucasus and Beelzebub began their conversation as such.

By the way, our party is currently set up in the following manner:

Caucasus is holding on at the lowest position, his horns holding onto the Nimbus Cloud.

Sitting atop the Nimbus Cloud is me — with Artemis equipped — and Beelzebub.

My role is to cast recovery magic on Caucasus’ legs when he needs it so that he does not fall due to the fatigue.

Beelzebub’s role on the other hand, is to provide magical energy to the Nimbus Cloud in order to maintain the deployment of the weather shield.

Although the Nimbus Cloud loses its functionality when going beyond the stratosphere, it does help with maintaining atmospheric pressure and reducing cosmic radiation.

Having distributed our roles as such, we are able to comfortably head towards the moon.

At this pace…it wouldn’t take an hour before we reach an altitude where the atmosphere is pretty thin.

Once it gets like that, moving at supersonic speed would not generate as much of a shockwave as it normally would.

I guess I’ll raise our rising speed once we get there.

******************************************************************************************

It’s been around 6 hours since then.

Ever since around the time  we escaped the stratosphere, I have begun raising the speed of the Ruyi Staff’s extension…however, I then discovered a truly shocking truth.

Would you believe it, the Ruyi Staff’s speed limit, isn’t just [Slightly faster than the speed of sound.].

Until just a moment ago, the Ruyi Staff was still accelerating.

I think it isn’t strange to say that the current speed is around 4 times the speed of sound.

It seems we’ll reach the moon sooner than we thought.

Well, even so, having to spend a few days inside the closed space of the Nimbus Cloud’s weather shield is…may seem boring, but that isn’t the case.

Seeing our planet from this height…is so beautifully breathtaking.

[What a great view…] (Varius)

[[Yeah…]] (Caucasus, Beelzebub)

Not just me, Caucasus and Beelzebub felt healed by that spectacle as well.

Oh, it’s already time.

I thought I’d take the opportunity to observe the various celestial bodies across the galaxy seeing as we’re already in space.

It’s not everyday one gets to clearly observe the celestial bodies without interference from the atmosphere.

Using telescopic magic, let us capture this precious moment.

For starters, I think I will begin by observing one of the planets orbiting around.

A few minutes later, I made a discovery regarding that planet.

In order to take a closer look, I drastically increased the magnification of the telescopic magic but…I almost fell off the Nimbus Cloud when I captured the image of the planet.

…W…Why does that planet have 4 natural satellites?!

As far as I know, that planet only has 2 natural satellites.

That fact should have been confirmed by scientists countless times.

I never heard anything about it having 4 natural satellites, exactly what is going on…?

After taking a few deep breaths and regaining my calm, I have come to a conclusion.

I, have reincarnated to a different planet.

Definitely, everything makes sense if I think about it that way.

The part where no Tamers know about awakening.

Or the part where the treatment of Tamers are unreasonably poor.

Even the fact that not a single person knows about True Chant magic.

Everything, is because [This planet has not achieved that level of civilisation yet.]

Well, not like I can say anything even if I know all this.

My feelings after having all my doubts since reincarnating resolved is…honestly, complicated.

****************************************************************************

It should have been a few days since then.

Our party has…finally come close enough to the moon to clearly see it as a small rock.

……It has really been a long journey.

Even if we were travelling at a speed multiple times faster than the speed of sound…380000km is really far after all.

Incidentally, I thought of trying to steer the Nimbus Cloud so I tried willing it to move. When I did that…the Nimbus Cloud only moved a little.

It was an experiment based on the hypothesis that [The flying abilities of the Nimbus Cloud would be displayed once it approaches the surface of a celestial body]…..and it seems that it was right.

[Thanks, Caucasus. It seems that I can finally move the Nimbus Cloud, so please get on. Let’s reach the surface of the moon together.] (Varius)

I told Caucasus, while slowing down the extension speed of the Ruyi Staff.

Soon after…using the Nimbus Cloud, we flew towards the surface of the moon.

I placed Artemis against a nearby boulder made of Lunar Metal.

Right after that…Artemis once again assumed the form of a girl.

[Thank you. I never would have thought that I would return to this place again……Ah~ I’m being filled with power.] (Artemis)

Artemis said while stretching.

Throwing herself into a depression in the Lunar Metal boulder, Artemis continued.

[Could you stay here for about 24 hours? With that amount of time…well, I should be able to recover about 60% of my full strength. Once I do, as thanks, I would like to share some of my power with you, Varius.] (Artemis)

Teihengyo Chapter 16 – The Nimbus Cloud Has A limit…The Nimbus Cloud Anyway

Translator: Cialaxis
Editor: Havion

Hey everyone, the will likely be the last post of the year. We’ll be on a Christmas break sooooo yeah.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone!
—————————————————————————————————–

[Artemis, could you return back to being a bow?] (Varius)

I asked Artemis after returning the extended Ruyi Staff back to its original length and storing it back into the storage.

[Back to a bow…I do not mind, but why?] (Artemis)

[I want to test…if it is possible to send you back to the moon.] (Varius)

[Is…is such a thing possible?] (Artemis)

Artemis latched on to my suggestion.

[Well…whether it is or not, is something that I won’t know until we’ve tried it. Still…it would help if you don’t hold on to too high of an expectation.] (Varius)

[U…understood.] (Artemis)

Artemis’ tension fell when I didn’t confirm the possibility and reverted to her bow form.

I equipped the bow that Artemis transformed into and got onto the Nimbus Cloud where Caucasus and the others are.

I had Artemis revert to her bow form in order for us to travel using the Nimbus Cloud together.

Artemis — who didn’t take part whatsoever in the Son Goku subjugation from my previous life — would only slip through the Nimbus Cloud if she tried to get on.

Although that is the case, similar to how I don’t suddenly end up naked when I get on to the Nimbus Cloud, my equipment and belongings would be transported along with me.

I raised our altitude once I got on the Nimbus Cloud.

Our destination is of course, the moon.

As humans would be unable to survive beyond the troposphere, the Nimbus Cloud’s shields are obviously deployed.

It would be great if we can reach the moon with just this.

Thinking such thoughts, I focused on raising the Nimbus Cloud’s altitude.

**********************************************************************************************

[Varius….raising our altitude any higher than this, is it not impossible?] (Caucasus)

It has been about 20 minutes since the Nimbus Cloud began its ascent.

In this space higher than the highest cloud, Caucasus raised his doubt.

Admittedly, it doesn’t seem like the Nimbus Cloud would ascend any higher.

The Nimbus Cloud which had moved as if cutting through the wind is currently barely even moving at 2 to 3 centimetres per second.

It’s just a matter of time before it comes to a complete stop.

For now, I thought of investigating our surroundings up here.

I looked around thinking that I might chance upon some clues…and moved the Nimbus Cloud towards a nearby cloud.

As a test, I thrusted a paper bestowed with the Litmus magic into the cloud.

Soon after…the paper immediately turned red.

……It’s a mother-of-pearl cloud[1].

Being at the same height as this cloud means that we are currently in the stratosphere (Altitude of 20-30km). This height seems to be the limit for the Nimbus Cloud.

Obviously, the moon is far higher than this.

After all, the distance between the surface and the moon is about 380000km.

[Caucasus…you wouldn’t happen to…be able to fly 10000 times this height…can you?] (Varius)

[As if I can.] (Caucasus)

I asked since I had nothing to lose but was flat out rejected.

……hmm, I’m out of ideas.

Since nothing can be done by staying at the stratosphere, we returned to the ground for the time being.

It’ll take another 20 minutes before we reach the ground anyway, might as well work on the plan.

[Varius, was it not possible?] (Artemis)

While I was racking my brains, a female’s voice called out telepathically.

Caucasus and Beelzebub should be males though…which would mean…Artemis?

[Yeah. Just so you know, I was listening when you made that unreasonable request from that rhinoceros beetle.] (Artemis)

…To think that she would be listening in.

Well, as long as she doesn’t go overboard, I won’t be coming up with any anti-telepathy-interception countermeasures.

On the contrary, I can say that this is something to be thankful for as we can have a strategy meeting.

[Artemis…if you’re OK with it, would you lend us your knowledge?] (Varius)

[My apologies…… To have you all go this far for me.] (Artemis)

Thus, the 4 of us (A person, 2 monsters, and an equipment?)[2] began our strategy meeting.

[The staff that Varius has, how long can it extend?] (Artemis)

Artemis enquired.

[I wonder. Based on the stories, it was said to be able to reach Trāyastriṃśa[3]…… This is just a simple estimate, but wouldn’t it be fine to assume that it extends to about 960000km?] (Varius)

[In that case, wouldn’t it reach the moon easily?] (Artemis)

Artemis thought of having the Ruyi Staff take her up.

The Ruyi Staff’s maximum length is 960000km; and the distance to the moon is 380000km. Definitely, it’s not an unreachable distance.

But…getting up there using it would likely be impossible.

When I confronted chouhakai, I avoided its attack by using the staff to get me up into the air…although, to reach the moon…ahh there’s no way.

Somewhere along the line, she’ll lose her balance and fall.

[Distance-wise, it isn’t a problem, however, the problem lies in securing the staff.] (Varius)

[……is that so.] (Artemis)

Artemis once again placed her hand to her chin and resumed thinking.

The one who came up with a new suggestion was Caucasus.

[Is there not a lake nearby? If it is a matter of anchoring the staff…will it not work if you just stab the staff there? This me will then freeze the lake.] (Caucasus)

……To think that there was such a method.

I thought Caucasus’ suggestion was brilliant.

It’s true that the current Caucasus would be able to freeze something like a lake.

If we can ensure the staff is anchored properly — thus resolving this foundation issue — the rest will work out somehow.

Which would mean…there’s only one last concern left.

[If I have to list a problem, it would be the creatures living in the lake…] (Varius)

……I stopped my sentence midway.

My last concern is in regards to the destruction of the ecosystem of the lake…but to be honest, that’s not something I should even consider.

I decided to do everything in my power in order to return Artemis to the moon.

To not prioritise that, what am I doing?

At the moment when I had made my resolve, Artemis sent an unexpected lifeline.

[Regarding the creatures living in the lake, if I strengthen their life force, they should be able to withstand being frozen.] (Artemis)

……I see, then that solves everything.

Assured of everything, I waited for the Nimbus Cloud to reach the ground.

Teihengyo Chapter 15 – It Was A Complicated Situation

Translator: Cialaxis
Editor: Havion
——————————————————————————————————-

Observing the area surrounding the Ruyi Staff quickly revealed the [someone] that shot the arrow.

That [someone] turns out to be a girl, and she’s standing right next to the Ruyi Staff…or rather, she seems to be touching the tip of the Ruyi Staff with deep interest.

She even has a bow equipped, so I don’t think I got the wrong person.

Thinking of calling out to the girl, I lowered the altitude of the Nimbus Cloud.

However, at that moment…the girl noticed us and decided to take a stance with her bow aimed at us.

[……Please wait! I do not intend to cause you any harm!] (Varius)

Raising both my hands as a sign of non-aggression, I spoke using voice amplification magic.

However…

[Do not move!] (Girl)

The girl shouted. Seeing the Nimbus Cloud continuing its descent might have touched a nerve.

Left without much choice, I stopped the Nimbus Cloud’s movement.

…Yeah…

Personally, I would like to somehow take the route where we can settle things peacefully but at this rate…it doesn’t seem like she would make it easy for me.

Should I take the plunge and just get right to the point?

With that in mind, I tried saying this to her.

[If it pleases you, I swear that I will never come to collect the Luna Metal ever again. I will dissuade others from coming to gather the Luna Metal as well.  That’s why……please tell me why do you attack those after the Luna Metal?] (Varius)

Once I did that…the girl released the stance she took with the bow, and gave the signal to [come down].

It looks like my decision was not wrong.

**********************************************************************************************

One should give their names first when enquiring about another’s.

Remembering such a saying, I began by introducing myself.

[I am Varius. I look like a Sage at first glance but I am actually a Tamer…Caucasus is my tamed monster and Beelzebub is his partner.] (Varius)

[Is that so. I am Artemis. A pleasure.] (Artemis)

This girl…Artemis gave a really succinct introduction.

[You, are you…a Hero?] (Varius)

I tilted my neck and enquired.

Although Artemis’ hair is red…it’s tone is unbelievably darker than that of a Hero’s, so I wasn’t sure.

[Hero? What is that?] (Artemis)

[“What is that” you say… I’m talking about the profession aptitudes for a human. Red-hairs are Heros, blondes are Sages, silver are Holy Knights, those kind of stuff.] (Varius)

For some reason, she didn’t understand my question, so I supplemented it with some information.

[I am not a human. See?] (Artemis)

Immediately after, Artemis let out a ‘bon’ sound and her figure vanished.

For a moment, I was bewildered as to where she may have disappeared to, however…upon closer inspection on the bow Artemis was using — which grew a size bigger — I understood what had happened.

……eh?

Artemis, the bow was your true form?

When I thought that it couldn’t be possible, the bow let out another sound —— and the figure of the bow wielding girl, Artemis, appeared.

[Are you for real?] (Varius)

[Yeah. I can take on the form of a human but……my true form is that of the bow.] (Artemis)

As the conversation continued……I thought of a question that would strike at the heart of the problem.

[Hey, could it be…is there some sort of connection between your original form being the bow and not wanting people to collect the Luna Metal?] (Varius)

Upon hearing that, Artemis made a slightly grim expression and began to talk.

[That is correct. I…need to absorb the energy from the Luna Metals, else I am unable to live.] (Artemis)

***********************************************************************************************

[Once, I lived on the moon.] (Artemis)

As I asked for a complete explanation, Artemis told me as such.

The talk is suddenly headed in a rather incredible direction…but I did see that irregular phenomenon after all.

For the time being, I’ll take her word for it.

[The moon you see, is made of Luna Metal. Back when I was on the moon, I was much more powerful you know? To the point where the arrow I shot at you would have blown away the entire area.] (Artemis)

Artemis pointed to the place where I found the Luna Metal.

Although thanks to the overgrown trees, I couldn’t see the area itself.

[But you see, I’m not even sure how long ago was this……one day, a single comet attacked the moon. Following that, I was blown off the moon.] (Artemis)

I see.

Which explains how she crash-landed here huh…

[When I fell onto this planet, I placed a barrier around myself and the Luna Metal that fell together with me in a desperate attempt to protect them. The Luna Metal would be incinerated when it entered the atmosphere if I didn’t after all.] (Artemis)

Artemis had a lonely look on her face when she said that.

……I’m starting to understand the situation.

The metal known as Luna Metal, the reason why I have never heard about it even in my past life…is probably because the ore only exists on the moon.

Artemis only crash-landed after my reincarnation.

[Currently, my life is linked to the miniscule amount of Luna Metal that I protected during the crash. If…if others continue to take even those, I will eventually die.

That is why I drive away anyone who comes after the Luna Metal…] (Artemis)

Artemis hung her head as she finished her story.

My head was in turmoil after listening to her story.

At this point, I don’t really care if I am unable to complete the request.

The penalty fee for the failure of the request is cheap compared to Artemis’ life after all.

However, I began to think that something is wrong if I just [return without collecting the Luna Metal].

Artemis said that she was much stronger when she was on the moon — where there was an abundance of Luna Metal.

Conversely, that would make the current Artemis terribly weak.

In other words, the action of [not taking the Luna Metals] is far from solving the fundamental problem.

I wonder if there’s some way to truly help Artemis.

Before I realised it…I began to seriously consider the possibilities of returning Artemis back to the moon.

Teihengyo Chapter 14 – The Arrow Came Flying

Translator: Cialaxis
Editor: Havion
—————————————————————————————————–

[Arrows flying out of nowhere you say… Even so, I think I’ll still take that request. Just in case, I can use healing magic] (Varius)

[U…understood. I have no choice but to accept if you insist but…it’s really a waste of time for a Sage.] (Receptionist)

With that, my acceptance of the request has been confirmed.

Following that was an explanation by the receptionist on the location of the Luna Metal gathering spot.

Well, I did manage to dodge Sun Goku’s faster-than-sound Ruyi Staff.

Even if I have not returned to my former strength…as long as it isn’t beyond expectations, I should be able to dodge the arrows.

Thinking so, I left the guild and muttered…

[Nimbus Cloud] (Varius)

A few seconds later.

The Nimbus Cloud with Caucasus and Beelzebub riding on it approached me.

While I was completing the procedures at the guild, I had both of them on standby, riding the Nimbus Cloud above the guild.

[Well then, shall we be off?] (Varius)

[Ahh] (Caucasus)

[Geez, I was getting sick of waiting.] (Beelzebub)

Once the three of us were seated on the Nimbus Cloud…we raised our altitude in one go.

[Since I was told that the Luna Metal can be found in between the foot of the mountain and the lake, so…around there I guess?] (Varius)

I confirmed my destination from above, and flew there using the Nimbus Cloud.

After flying for about ten minutes, we have arrived at our destination.

After storing the Nimbus Cloud using storage magic, I used detection magic.

The result…I now know that there are some rather insignificant monsters lurking about nearby.

[Caucasus, I’ll leave the intimidation to you.] (Varius)

[Understood] (Caucasus)

As I requested, Caucasus released a wave of magic with the intention to threaten the nearby monsters.

[Varius, is this enough?] (Caucasus)

[Ahh, the small fries are gone. Thank you.] (Varius)

Doing this, I won’t have to bother myself with the monster’s attack and focus on gathering the Luna Metal and avoiding the arrows.

Now that things are in order, it’s about time to start searching for the Luna Metal.

***********************************************************************************

It’s been about 10 minutes of walking around since the search for the Luna Metal began.

Finally, I have discovered a stone that matches the characteristics which the guild has told me about.

By the way, there hasn’t been any attacks by arrows yet.

Although I’ve been using [Presence Detection] — which allows one to sense any movements or objects that enters a certain range — constantly…however, not once was there any sign of such a high-speed movement characteristic to arrows.

It’s possible that the archer may have ran away due to Caucasus’ intimidation earlier.

Having optimistic thoughts such as “That’s works just fine”, I picked the ore up.

But……at that exact timing, an arrow came flying.

I immediately twisted my upper body, dodging it.

As I expected, the arrow was at a level where dodging it is but a simple matter.

To top it off, I was able to tell from which direction the arrow came from thanks to presence detection.

As long as I know that it isn’t that big of a threat, I can ignore the arrows and continue gathering the Luna Metal.

But…a good idea just struck me, so I decided to act on it.

[Varius, why are you taking the Ruyi Staff out?] (Caucasus)

[That kind of thing needn’t even be said. Varius is gonna use that Ruyi Staff to repel the bastard who attacked earlier.] (Beelzebub)

As I took the Ruyi Staff out of the storage magic, Caucasus questioned me while Beelzebub guessed my intentions.

Well, normally that conjecture would be correct.

However…my plan this time is a little different from Beelzebub’s expectations.

[Beelzebub, although you’re close…you only got it half-right. I don’t intend to take down the guy who shot the arrow.] (Varius)

Telling Beelzebub that, I extended the Ruyi Staff towards the place the arrows came from.

The Ruyi Staff extended at a speed where even if it meets an obstacle, it would not destroy it.

Shortly after, the Ruyi Staff hit something hard.

I then stopped the extension of the Ruyi Staff.

[Caucasus, Beelzebub, please get on the Nimbus Cloud.] (Varius)

I urged the two of them.

After that, I got onto the Nimbus Cloud myself and took to the skies.

[Varius, what is the meaning of this?] (Caucasus)

[Look below. Can you see the Ruyi Staff that I left behind?] (Varius)

I pointed at the Ruyi Staff that I left on the ground as I said so.

[Think about it, somebody shot and arrow from the direction which we are heading towards, which would mean that there shouldn’t be any obstacles in between us and that somebody, right?] (Varius)

[That is true…… Ahh, so that’s it!] (Caucasus)

Caucasus seems to have come to an understanding.

Caucasus then continued.

[In other words…if we search around the area where the Ruyi Staff extended towards, we should be able to find whoever attacked us.] (Caucasus)

[That’s how it is.] (Varius)

I was impressed by Caucasus’ sharpness. The place where I left the Ruyi Staff may no longer have anyone nearby, so we focused searching from the sky instead.

Teihengyo Chapter 13 – There Was A Strange Request

Translator: Cialaxis
Editor: Havion
———————————————————————————————————-

The adventurer’s guild is a building that looks like a government office, with the reception counters segregated based on their scope — [Requests/Achievement Reports/Materials Purchasing] or [Various Procedures (New Member Registration, Party Registration, etc)].

The side which isn’t [Requests/Achievement Reports/Materials Purchasing] is arranged in a pretty sloppy manner… Well, taking the frequency of use into consideration, this is within expectations.

I approached the [Various Procedures] counter in order to register as a new member with those thoughts in my mind.

However……

[Hey…that’s…a Sage isn’t it?] (Mob 1)

[Amazing…it’s my first time seeing one.] (Mob 2)

Due to my hair colour, I stood out in no time.

……Yeah, I thought this would happen.

The Sage is (In this world where the value of Tamers are unfairly low) known to be one of the chosen high-tiered professions after all.

As the existence of one itself is rare, attention would naturally be gathered.

If I change my hair colour back to black, this should not happen. However…I deliberately did not pick that option.

As for why, it’s because when revealing that I am a student of Elite academy during the new adventurer registration process, being a Sage is much more convenient.

First, the reason as to why I would reveal that I am a student of Elite Academy during the registration. It’s because for Elite Academy’s students, if they show their student handbooks, they would not start from the lowest F-Rank, but the intermediate C-Rank instead.

There are no reasons not to use this.

Also, the reason I left my hair blonde is because returning it to black while acting as a student of Elite Academy would likely bring all sorts of trouble to me down the road.

Just the fact that a Tamer is an Elite Academy student would undoubtedly get people talking, not to mention the chaos it would cause once the Academy gets wind of the rumours.

In the worst case, I wouldn’t put it pass them to suspect that my student handbook is a forgery.

Well, I could just prove that those charges are false but…nevertheless, I’d rather not bear the risk of being treated like a criminal, even for a moment.

That’s why I decided to endure the attention and conduct myself as a Sage.

I disregarded the adventurers who turned their attention to me and called out to the lady receptionist by the [Various Procedures] counter.

[Excuse me, I would like to register as an adventurer] (Varius)

[A sage…ah, my apologies! Adventurer registration right? Understood.] (Receptionist)

The receptionist saw my hair colour and froze for a moment but regained her senses soon after and continued speaking.

[Please fill out these forms.] (Receptionist)

I took the forms produced by the receptionist as she said so…and filled in my name, age, as well as the name of the school I am currently attending.

I returned the forms to the receptionist once I was done.

[I’m done] (Varius)

[Understood. …tte…EHHH?! El…you’re a student of Elite Academy? I thought it was rare that a Sage has come, but to think you are a student of that Academy as well…] (Receptionist)

The receptionist lady was flustered.

At this rate, I feel that it will be awhile before we can continue…a few seconds after the receptionist was surprised, I enquired of her:

[Are you waiting for me to present a proof of my identity?] (Varius)

I showed the receptionist lady my student handbook.

[This is it.] (Varius)

[This is definitely…the student handbook of Elite Academy. Thank you very much!] (Receptionist)

The receptionist went to the back for a moment to operate something…and came back to the counter holding a card.

[Originally we would conduct a registration exam but…Elite Academy students are exempted from that, furthermore, it is possible for them to start off as a C-rank adventurer. This is your adventurer card, please ensure that you do not lose it.] (Receptionist)

[Understood. Thank you very much.] (Varius)

I stored the card given by the receptionist lady in my storage magic.

The registration is done with this, huh.

Well then, next is to look for a good request from the request board.

*********************************************************************************

There were various requests ranging from the bottom-most F-rank to the A-rank which is 2 ranks above mine. Looks like this town does not have requests of the highest rank — S-rank.

For the record, I can accept requests up to C-rank solo, but…it’s my first time after all, might as well go through the all the requests from rank F to C.

[Let’s see…] (Varius)

Giving the requests a once over, I’ve more or less grasped the general trend.

That is: [The lower ranks have more collection quests, while the number of subjugation and escort requests increases the higher the rank].

Well, that’s common sense.

Since there weren’t any interesting requests for ranks F~D, I focused my attention towards requests belonging to my rank — C.

“There shouldn’t be any gathering requests once I got to this rank”, was my thought, however…I discovered a single exception in a corner of the board.

It was such a request:

——————————————————————————————————-

Gathering Luna Metal

Rank: C

Request Content: Gather the [Luna Metal Ore] that fell to the bottom of the mountain. 200 Zol would be paid for every gram.

——————————————————————————————————–

For a moment, I thought it was a bad joke.

I do have doubts on a gathering request being C-ranked, but I can still accept it with an open mind.

It’s because I can think of cases where the possible gathering spots are danger zones inhabited by monsters which beginners would not be able to handle.

Even if that were not the case, it’s possible that [The terrain or environment of the gathering spot is such that one could not reach it unless they have the endurance of an intermediate-level or higher adventurer].

However…the problem were not any of those.

The ore known as Luna Metal, is something that I have never heard of before, even including my past life.

It’s a request which I suspect could be a prank but…that request clearly has the guild’s logo on it.

Which would mean that it is a legitimate request.

……That request, guess I’ll accept it.

Thinking so, I took the Luna Metal Gathering request form.

There’s only one reason.

This request is ideal for me.

If powerful monsters appear, I could just leave it to Caucasus and Beelzebub and focus on gathering.

Even if there’s a problem with the terrain or environment, I could easily overcome it by getting there directly using the Nimbus Cloud.

Considering that a meal from a restaurant costs about 1000 Zol, even without taking the rate of discovery of the ore, 200 Zol for every gram is a pretty good trade.

This request which seems to be catered just for me, there’s no way I won’t accept it.

I queued up at the counter with the request form in hand…and told the receptionist lady my intention to take the request.

The receptionist lady’s eyes opened wide when she heard that.

She then…said the following.

[Are you sure you want to take the『Luna Metal Gathering』request? This request…every adventurer who took it came back with serious injuries you know? It was caused by arrows that appeared out of nowhere the moment the Luna Metal was picked up.] (Receptionist)

Teihengyo Chapter 12 – The Person I Saved Is A BigWig

Tranlator: Cialaxis
Editor: Havion
—————————————————————————————————-

Making my way through the crowd, I somehow managed to get close enough to the notice board that I could read the words.

My candidate number is [A-0415].

Since the topmost number of the third column from the left is [A-0377], and the bottommost number is [A-0465], I searched for my number within that column.

[A-0401……A-0403……A-0415…… It’s there!] (Varius)

That scared me.

I felt a chill just from seeing the sudden skip in 12 numbers.

While having those thoughts, I moved my eyes towards the examination results.

The results were as follows:

[Written exam   : 40/40

 Combat exam  : 30/30

 Magic exam   : 30/30

 Passing marks : 100/100

 Standard score : 101.2 ]

Standard score…some rather nostalgic term just popped up.

Since unlike my past life, there aren’t any mock examinations, which means I didn’t have the opportunity to measure my standard score.

What’s more, for it to exceed 100.

Feeling a great delight at having obtain a result that I would not regret even in my past life, I left the notice board.

……If I recall, those who have passed should go and collect their student handbook and textbooks.

With that in mind, I was about to follow the route shown by information board when a man called out to me.

[Aren’t you…you are the child who helped me out with my carriage together with Caucases!] (Man)

I turned towards the source of the voice… Definitely, that man was the one who was riding on the carriage we helped out.

[Did you come to study in Elite Academy? I don’t think I need to ask but…did you manage to pass without any problem?] (Man)

[Yes, I have properly passed the exam.] (Varius)

I replied with a smile.

……Still, why is this man here?

[Are you a lecturer of Elite Academy?] (Varius)

I tried asking what would most likely be the case.

But…the reply I got exceeded my expectations.

[You see, I am the vice-chairman of the Board of Education, and I came here for an inspection.] (Vice-Chairman)

…This guy, he’s actually quite the bigwig isn’t he?

Now that he mentioned it, when I think back to his attire when he came out of the carriage, it did feel pretty high-class.

But…as to why he picked today of all days to conduct an inspection, I do not know.

[Is there something to be gained from inspecting the examinees’ results?] (Varius)

[As it is my job, I am afraid I have no choice in the matter. 『The upper echelons of the Board of Education are to provide excellent freshmen the privilege to skip a single unit』, that is the kind of system we have. As part of that effort, I have the duty of verifying the examinees who have passed.  ] (Vice-chairman)

[I see…] (Varius)

So that’s why.

Well, its true that [For some discipline, a student whose proficiency is such that taking classes would just be a waste of time] or something to that extent would be elevated to a higher level.

It’s quite a reasonable system.

[At the end of the day, it is just the possibility of being granted the privilege, and since I personally view this system in a negative light, this privilege has not been granted very often… However…] (Vice-chairman)

The man cut off his sentence for a moment.

[……Exam candidate number A-0415. Do you see that? That examinee produced an unprecedented full marks right? When I saw that, even I was at a loss.] (Vice-Chairman)

I see. A-0415, I pray that you would find h—…wait a minute.

[Err…] (Varius)

Getting his attention, I showed him my candidate number.

[……Well what do you know, so you are A-0415! All right then, no complaints here. This…is yours.] (Vice-chairman)

The man presented an envelope to me.

The envelope had [Contains single unit exemption form] written on it.

[……Thank you very much.] (Varius)

[Yeah. Please use your time for something productive, to the best of your abilities!] (Vice-chairman)

With that, I stored the letter using storage magic and bid him farewell. This time for sure, I left to collect my student handbook and textbooks.

**********************************************************************************************

After collecting my textbooks, student handbook, as well as various enrollment documents, I went over to the canteen for lunch and to look over the course materials.

By the way, if one shows the person-in-charge their student handbook, they are entitled to up to 90 free meals each month.

It would be great if I could complete the various procedures quickly… First off, I should decide on my timetable.

While I’m doing so, I’ll look out for subjects which I can skip.

[Etto……] (Varius)

I opened the book and looked through the pages.

For the core subjects, Fundamentals of Magic Theory and Fundamentals of Strategies are only graded based on the final exam. Guess I’ll be skipping those then.

Though the Practical Magic Training has participation marks…at the end of the day, it’s just an insurance for the finals. Guess I’ll be skipping that then.

The grades for Practical Labyrinth Activities are determined by the number of monsters subjugated during the school term, huh… As I can just single-mindedly raise my results in a short time, this seems like a good skip as well.

From the general electives, I think I’ll go with “Introduction to Cooperation Between Professions” and “Introduction to the Kingdom’s History”.

For the latter, the participation marks are only 10%, and one can get full marks by the end of the term if the report submitted is deemed to be the best. Skip it is.

The former is focused on the fieldwork and it would be fine as long as the report is submitted by the end of the term. There pretty much aren’t any formal classes for this one.

Seems like I have to pick two units from the list of free electives.

The first one, [Way of Life of a Tamer] should be fine. I’m originally a Tamer after all. The grades are decided only at the end of the term huh? Skip.

For the remaining one, I can just use the exemption letter to —— huh?

……Well what do you know, I’m skipping the entire upcoming school term.

In the first place, what I want to accomplish is [To spread the correct teachings of a Tamer and improve the Tamers’ labour conditions].

To that end, as long as I can graduate with excellent results, focusing on extracurricular activities and increasing my achievements while completing my schoolwork should be the correct decision for me.

Well I’ve received the textbooks, rather than going around in circles trying to figure out how to achieve my end goal, I’m better off preparing countermeasures for the end of the upcoming school term… It might be a good idea to travel to different towns using the Nimbus Cloud.

Having made a decision…as a preparation for the journey, I ordered the maximum amount of food my student handbook would allow and stored them using my storage magic.

**********************************************************************************************

A few days later.

After completing the various course registration, I got onto the Nimbus Cloud and…… arrived in the town next to the town the Elite Academy is in — Merkels.

The Merkels Adventurer Guild in right in front of me.

My adventurer life, start!

Teihengyo Chapter 11 – The Upgrade to Chantless

Tranlator: Cialaxis
Editor: Havion
—————————————————————————————————-

As the reverberation caused by the sonic boom dissipates, silence began to take over the building.

Likely due to that attack — Or rather, the sound of it — being rather flashy, I’ve gathered a fair bit of attention to myself.

Somehow, even the neighbouring examinee’s opponent is looking over here with an open mouth… Is it fine for you to not focus on the match?

[…An opening!] (Examinee)

It’s not fine at all.

While the student’s attention was focused here, the examinee managed to score a hit with a sword thrust.
…Took the [Fair] right out of [Fair Match] huh?

Well, I can understand the desperate feeling of wanting to pass, so I’ll refrain from further comments.

Now then, since the match has concluded, I’ll head over to where the magic test will be held

Right as I planned to leave…the examiner blurted out something  ridiculous.

[Ca…Cadie-san has been spirited away!] (Examiner)

The examiner was making a commotion while moving about, all flustered.

…Oi, oi. How on Earth did you come to that conclusion?

[…She wasn’t spirited away. She just fell out of the arena.] (Varius)

I can’t be having my examination results nulled due to some ridiculous reason, so I pointed towards Cadie who was blown out of the arena, proving my victory.

[H….huh…? You’re right…. For that excellent Cadie to be blown out of the arena with the first hit…am I having a bad dream?] (Examiner)

The examiner’s hand has stopped writing…is he all right?

Praying that he does his job properly, I went over to the location of the next examination.

 ********************************************************************************************

The location of the magical examination.

It’s an outdoor facility normally used as a training ground.

The examinees and I lined up, forming rows.

While I was looking at the other examinees’ magic… I discovered one weird point.

For some reason, every single one of them is using chantless magic.

I can understand the reasoning behind using chantless magic if the content of the examination was to [Defeat a monster using magic]. Casting speed is vital during close combat afterall.

Beyond that, if one focuses on only the strength of the magic, I believe chant magic is better…so why?

[……Next!]

After much consideration — and no conclusion to show for it — my turn came.

Well, its fine. They are they, and I am I. I’ll properly go through with it using chant magic.

The examinees used the various magic specific to their profession but…since Sages generally use Fire Arrow, I guess I’ll go with the upgraded version of that.

[Oh mana gathered within me, become Uemon’s Great Flame and pierce my enemies—! Barbeque Arrow—!!] (Varius)

The exam’s content was to [Shoot down, in sequence, the 5 targets prepared using magic.], although…my magic hit the 3rd — in other words, the centre — target.

Barbeque Arrow exploded upon hitting the target…and the shockwave destroyed the remaining 4 targets.

Although it wasn’t 5 shots of magic, but since it achieved the intended result of destroying the targets, this should just as well give me the score.

Thinking so, I was going to leave the area but…the examiners who were silently recording the results suddenly started making a commotion.

[……The targets were…destroyed?…Wh…what the Hell was that nonsensical power?!] (Examiner)

[…Was I not supposed to destroy them?] (Varius)

I became a little uneasy.

Now that I think about it, since the thought of a Tamer taking the exam did not cross their minds, the targets’ durability was probably set to the lowest setting.

If they do not have spare targets, in the worst case, I would be regarded as having obstructed the examination. I could repair the targets using magic but…they probably won’t acknowledge a target repaired by an examinee……

As my thoughts were going into such a direction, the examiner continued.

[No, we do have spare targets just in case. Wait, that’s not the problem here! Putting aside the fact that the power of that magic was so stupidly strong…how did you even get that sort of power from chant magic?!]

Somehow, I felt that the examiner’s tone started becoming stronger. Still, what does he mean? Rather, it would be [Because it was chant magic] that I was to produce that kind of power.

[Chant magic is able to raise the basic power of chantless magic right?] (Varius)

[There’s no such thing. Chant magic is only able to display power that is predetermined by the chant itself, which makes it fundamentally inferior to chantless magic.] (Examiner)

Hearing that…a thought popped up in my head.

Could it be that this world do not know of True Chant Magic?

[It’s true that the strength of a chant magic is closely related to its associated chant, and does not provide the user the freedom to manipulate mana unlike that of chantless magic.] (Varius)

[……That’s right.] (Examiner)

[However, later on it was discovered that『If one chants with a certain tone colour by controlling the opening and closing of the vocal cords, as well as the positioning of the Adam’s Apple, that problem would be solved. This method was then given the name True Chant Magic. Right? 』] (Varius)

[What’s with that ridiculous logic?! That’s the first I’ve heard of it!] (Examiner)

……He really didn’t know about it.

In any case, as long as there is my magic to serve as proof, I don’t think it can be considered ridiculous.

[Well, it’s fine. I don’t really get what you were saying but…I’ll be giving you full marks.] (Examiner)

Saying that, the examiner began recording the marks.

He seemed to have some doubts, but well, whatever.

I moved to a place where no one can see me, took the Nimbus Cloud out and left the academy.

************************************************

3 days later.

As the results are out, I head towards the notice board of Elite Academy.

A crowd had already formed around the notice board.

Those making small guts poses, those who broke down crying on the spot, those being tossed up into the air…there really are many kinds of people.

Well, it seems that there are those among the ones being tossed into the air that are just pretending to be one of examinees that have passed — something known as [Air Elite Academy].[1] Hence, it’s unclear whether those celebrating have actually passed the exam or not.

Now then, time to see if my name is on the board or not.

Notes:

[1]: A reference to [エア東大受験](Air Todai Examination) where those who didn’t even take the exam plays a game where they pretend to be one of those who passed the exam. They “win” if no one finds out they are lying. Could only find this link to explain although its in Japanese. Well, Google page translate helps.
